ASUS Eee PC 1008HA Seashell 10.1-Inch Pearl White Netbook - 6 Hour Battery Life Review
Have had this for a few weeks now and I’m reasonably happy with it. It’s a great little machine for everyday basic web surfing and word processing. Very light and very portable, but powerful enough to do more than the older netbooks.
Pros:
- Extremely light
- Sleek and easy on the eyes
- 92% full size keyboard, very easy to type on.
- shift keys are full size, ctrl key is in the right spot like normal keyboard.
- good battery life.
Cons:
- Power supply is internal, so no replacement easily.
- Memory can not be easily upgraded. Doable, but takes some effort.
- Extremely shiny, which causes fingerprints to show up quite easily.
- touchpad takes a little bit time getting used to. This is because it is flush with the netbook body, so scrolling using touch pad can be hard because it’s not easy to feel where the edge of the touch pad is.
- a little weak if watching youtube videos while on battery power. This is on Ubuntu Karmic, so may be different on XP (comes with it).
Personally, I did not like Windows XP which came with the netbook. I removed it and loaded Ubuntu Karmic (9.10) Netbook Remix and it works like a charm. Everything works out of the box. The only thing that are currently not working is some of the minor function keys like screen resolution changes. Not a big deal for me, just beware that they may not work if you decide to go with Ubuntu without some additional tweaking. Battery life with Ubuntu is a little bit less than on Windows XP. This may be due to not tweaking the power management options yet.
If you are curious, Chrome OS does work on this machine out of the box. Loaded it with a flash drive and LAN/Wireless works out of the box. Because this comes with a SD slot, you can have Chrome OS run off a SD and just boot from removable drive.
If you really need to have replacement batteries and want easy access to memory, get the 1005HA. If you really want something super light and shiny and very sleek looking, get the 1008HA. Both have the same hardware specs, just the looks are different.
